Pedal Drive Canoe Prototype For Sale: $1200. The 2024 canoe/kayak design season is here which means I need to sell last years prototypes to make room for this years builds! We just put up 3 kayaks and 2 canoes on our website. There are some smoking deals here if the boat is right for you.

14’8” long, 29” wide, 39 lbs in normal canoe mode (includes flotation), 54lbs in pedal drive mode. This canoe can be used as a normal canoe with the drive hole plugged, or the adapter box and rudder can be added to make it a pedal drive boat. An outrigger is also easy to rig. Ribs are white oak, stringers are western red cedar, gunwales are a cedar/spruce lamination, outwales are cherry, seat is ash, skin is 9oz ballistic nylon coated with 4 coats of 2 part polyurethane, stem bands are HDPE.

Used 5 times. I’m selling it because I need the space and I want a little more stability for fishing in rough water. This initial adapter box design used 6 attachment screws which has not failed in use, but I did notice that the integrated plywood base plate has curved slightly under the tension of the skin resulting in less pressure on the foam seal toward the center of the ends. This has not leaked yet but in the subsequent models I now use 10 attachment bolts for redundancy in case one bolt fails and to keep the base plate flatter. The aluminum rudder blade is wider and shorter than what I currently use. A narrower longer blade adds more turning power and they are easy to make. The tops of the gunwales are dirty from my roof rack, and it is missing the self rescue/catamaran loops which could also be used to mount an outrigger but those are easy to re-rig.

This boat would be a good fit for paddlers from 5’2” to 5’9” tall. 120-175 lbs. Weight of paddlers shown in order: 140, 165, 190lbs. On the smaller end of that spectrum it could be used for camping in mild to moderate conditions. Heavier paddlers should only use this as a day boat in moderate conditions. It fits me nicely at 5’8” 165lbs.

This canoe is 13’10” long, 29.5” wide, 12.5” deep, 2.5” rocker, 32lbs. Gunwales and stringers are made from western red cedar, ribs are made from white oak, outwales are made from cherry, seat is laminated from walnut. Skin is 9 oz ballistic nylon coated with 4 coats of 2 part polyurethane and 2 extra coats on the bottom. Stem bands are Delrin. The canoe is slightly small for me at 5’8” 165lbs, but I had a lot of fun with it as a day boat, fishing and running whitewater up to class II. If this boat was 14’3” long instead of 13’10” long, I would probably keep it! I personally love a manueverable canoe so I built this with 2.5” of rocker which might be a bit loose for some people, depending on your preferences. A very slight skeg could tune the tracking.

Why I’m selling it: As a designer I am constantly producing new prototypes and don’t have storage for more than 10 boats at a time. This canoe was only used about 10 times but has been sitting outside upside down for 3 years. The gunwales have a few bangs and gouges from my utter lack of care, but there is no structural damage. The skin is worn from UV exposure, but otherwise has very few scratches. I would estimate the remaining skin life to be 2-5 years depending on use. Reskinning costs $200 in materials and takes 3 days including coating. This canoe includes the cleats and mast step for our pop-up sail system but does not come with a sail. I hope to have DIY instructions for our sail available by the end of the year. This would be good general purpose “playful” canoe for anyone from 130 to 170lbs. Smaller people could also load it down for tripping. Floor mat is included.

We just put up 2 canoes, 3 kayaks, and 2 kayak frames on our website but I thought I would feature them here as well. There are some smoking deals here if the boat is right for you.

This is our LPB design and there is on the water video shown on our website. It is 16’3” long, 22” wide, 36lbs. Gunwales, stringers, stems, and deck beams are western red cedar, ribs are white oak. Skin is 9oz ballistic nylon coated with 3 layers of 2 part polyurethane. It has a has a brass bow protection strip, HDPE stern keel protection strip, reflective perimeter lines, and bungee loop on the foredeck. Slidelock footbraces, Snap Dragon backband, drain plug, fold down bilge pump clips, and foam thigh braces. Full length seat pad to put on top of the ribs included. This is my personal LPB and I love paddling it. I built it with 3/8” more rocker than the standard design because I like maneuverability.

Why I’m selling it: We are constantly updating our designs and this boat is 4 years old now. It has only been paddled about 20 times, but it was stored outside. This has the older style footbraces, it has 3 layers of coating over acid dye coloring instead of the more durable 4 layers and a keel strip with pigment coloring we use now. The ribs in the back are slightly collapsed although this is purely aesthetic and actually improves performance. There are a few worn spots along the keel which will need to be replenished with aqua seal and a brutal scratch from hitting a sharp volcanic rock at high speed while sailing. I rub aqua seal on this from time to time. I estimate the remaining lifespan of this skin to be 3-4 years. Reskinning costs $200 and takes 3 days of work (if you do it). There are 2 screws on either gunwale behind the cockpit plugging the holes where I changed this from the leather strap to the newer bungee back deck system. The ideal paddler for this boat is going to be 150 to 175lbs with an inseam of 32 inches or less.

All of this video was shot in less than five minutes along a 100 yard straight line meaning that you’re just seeing the stingrays that happened to be directly in front of the camera. Water depth is 3-12 inches. This ain’t your local trout stream.

I love catching triggerfish because they are beaut

I love catching triggerfish because they are beautiful, abundant, delicious, low in toxins (mercury), and punch hard above their weight in a fight. A 3 pound trigger fish fights harder than a 7 pound steelhead. They are also incredibly durable, with literally the toughest skin of any animal I’ve ever butchered, and bony gill plates that protect tiny gill openings. The teeth of a trigger fish are capable of biting through coral, so I’m always careful with my hands around the mouth! Interestingly, I have better luck of fishing barbless for these I think it’s because the hook penetrates deeper.

After using the new pedal drive canoe with the out

After using the new pedal drive canoe with the outrigger for a few weeks, I’m already planning for the next iteration. as I’ve said multiple times already, I am never going to build another hybrid solo/tandem. The boat just sits too high in the water, and catches too much wind in solo mode. Also, the wind down here in Baja is ferocious so even for a solo, I think I would probably drop the ends and deck them over to give me a little more control.

As far as the outrigger goes, it does make for a really nice stable platform for fishing and photography, but it’s also just more dragged and more windage. With the outrigger attached, the boat seems to have about the same amount of drag as any other wide fishing kayak, which does take a little bit of the magic away. The float is definitely oversized for this size of canoe so I will be ordering a smaller one for the next one. The nice thing is that the outrigger system sets up and breaks down in minutes so I can choose to use it or not depending on conditions.

The flat plate aluminum rudder is dead easy to build, and works reasonably well for what it is but I do think I will offer another version of it that is significantly more expensive and more challenging to build with a foil shape for better control. That way people can decide if the extra effort is worth it.

Honestly, I’m still pretty freaked out in the wind and waves which has more to do with my background as a kayaker and less to do with the canoe. In a kayak I’ll just keep fishing in 5 foot wind waves and a 25 knot crosswind, but in a canoe I’m running for shelter the minute the wind hits 15 and the chop is 2 feet tall. I’m hoping I can push that envelope a little bit further with next year’s solo design just for a little bit of extra safety factor. If I could build something more like a Kruger canoe with a pedal drive in it, I think that would give me an acceptable amount of seaworthiness, even if it’s not as much Im used to.

For fishing in Baja I did zero research and brough

For fishing in Baja I did zero research and brought my steelhead pole with 20 pound braid and a handful of old spinners. Seems to work fine. I think this little guy is called a Cortez Grunt. I lost my good fish pliers already, and these channel locks are a poor substitute. You wouldn’t know it from this video but I crimp all the barbs on my hooks and honestly I don’t lose very many fish, it’s just a lot easier to unhook them and does less damage. I imagine that when I accidentally hook a yellowtail, things are going to go badly….
